Afghan special operations forces and police rushed to American University of Afghanistan Wednesday after gunshots and an explosion rang out shortly before 8 p.m. local time.

Emergency Hospital in Kabul treated at least five people for injuries after the attack.

“Help we are stuck inside AUAF and shooting flollowed [sic] by Explo this maybe my last tweets,” Pulitzer Prize-winning Associated Press photographer Massoud Hossaini tweeted at one point before escaping through emergency doors.

“As we were running I saw someone lying on the ground face down, they looked like they had been shot in the back,” Mr. Hossaini told AP.

A police operation is underway to find the attackers, who are still on campus, Interior Ministry spokesman Siddiq Siddiqui told reporters.

AUAF, which has roughly 17,000 students, was also attacked in 2014, when an explosion at a restaurant next to the campus killed 21 people.
